Most educators would agree that the matrix rubrics posted so widely on the internet are too nebulous for students and parents to know precisely what is expected. The sample dichotomous rubrics provide educators an alternative. They can be used as they are. In addition a blank dichotomous rubric in Word is posted to download for creating new dichotomous rubrics.
The blank graphs are the student run chart and the class run chart. The larger space at the bottom of the run charts is to describe more precisely what type of assignment was evaluated. For 6 traits writing, students would write the trait. For math problem solving, students would write the type of problem – geometry, measurement, whole number, fraction, and so on.
The reading dichotomous rubric is designed to be utilized monthly over the course of a school year with the same level of text.
Most of the implementation of the LtoJ® process is with surface learning. The result is that students place the surface learning into their long-term memory in less classroom time. Because students remember this surface learning over the summer, far less time in the new school year is utilized for review. This saved time is obviously used for deep learning assignments. The dichotomous rubric is utilized for tracking continuous improvement with deep learning just like it is used to track learning with surface learning.
